No. Japanese subs in said moment use word "おそるべき" (OSORUBEKI)  Japanese-English dictionary here: https://jisho.org/search/osorubeki clearly states that it should translates as: 1. dreadful; terrible; horrible; deplorable​ 2. fearsome; formidable; awesome; redoubtable​ "Fearful" would be either "びくびく" (BIKUBIKU) either "おびえた" (OBIETA). Both means "fearful" as "Cowardly". "OSORUBEKI" here on the other hand means "Fierce", "ferocious" and so on. You know, this "Comically Serious" trope (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheComicallySerious?from=Main.Unfunny). Considering how exaggeratedly serious he acts with her.
