This BD is a really bad upscale. It's absurdly oversharpened, with massive ringing and haloing. I tried fixing it with dehalo_alpha, but I could only do so much
There is a strong argument to be made that the DVDs are better. I'd upscale the DVDs myself, but nyaa doesn't allow that.

you could just upload the DVDs without upscaling them
Just be thankful for the fact that people upload these fantastic anime in the first place,
No one asked you to downloaded them so no need to complain .
I'll join the BD bashing.
Go and compare ep 7 DVD to BD. It will leave you wondering how something like that could even happen.
The bluray version of that episode is cropped. Croppedd and stretched.

Why? Why?!
Also I would be very strongly opposed to upscaling the DVD. Just make new release in original DVD resolution. AV1 should still result in smaller files with same visual quality (this 1080p release is already smaller than the best looking 480p DVD release :D). People who just look at the resolution are dumb and doing things for them is not worth it.
Making it dual audio would also be nice since the best dvd based torrent only has jp audio and has no ED subs. Including the bonus material and multiple language subs would be nice too.
Basically just make it the Haibane Renmei torrent to that is simply better the other ones.
Also be sure to pick the best DVD if you do it. They have clearly visible quality differences http://www.framecompare.com/screenshotcomparison/9B2FMNNU
I didni't mean using those as the source.
The differences between different DVD torrents is just big enough that I assume different region DVDs have different quality video on them. The torrent that lists R2J DVD as the source looks the best.
I've been using machine learning algorithms to upscale anime, currently working on hajime no ippo, getting the original 480p up to 1440p, in addition to adding motion interpolation to smooth out the fights/motion. It looks pretty good and the motion interpolation is much better than what you can get with SVP interpolation software.
So far it takes me about 1 episode every 2 days, but right now taking a bit of a break cause it's hot and it ends up heating the house too much.
So has there not been an official 1080p release of this? What was the original resolution release without any upscaling applied to it?
This is the official 1080p release. It was (officially) upscaled poorly.
> What was the original resolution
PROBABLY 854x480... Pure guess.
I've looked at the DVDs, and they're pretty blurry, but they don't have any of the other issues the blu-rays have.
The master was probably lower as it's blurry, my guess is it was originally like 360p or so but then they upscaled it higher to fit the standard at the time more?
Anyway, I've done some upscaling, here's the link:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1K7dFJvaVNUgTDWH6GxpNndMVfilx-YFk/view?usp=sharing
So basically, in the zip file there's the original I used, then there's just an upscaled one, and then there's an upscaled one and an interpolated one, tell me which one you guys like more?
Sadly there isn't much of a difference that I can tell from the original vs the upscaled one, it is a tad sharper though.
The upscaled one seems to be better than the upscaled+interpolated (imho). Sharper and it keeps more details.
The result is rather good, considering the source !
I myself prefer the interoplated+upsacaled one as the motion is more pleasing, though it does take a few minutes to get used to it.
I'm not quite happy with the upscaled one, so I think I'll leave it for now. I'll finish my ippo one, then do hunter x hunter, and then I'll see if I can get another algorithm (or better) to try out on Haibane with maybe another algorithm for sharpening, I'll have to play with it.
I made a DVD version: https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1279846
The BD is clearer, the DVD transfer is relatively blurry, but exhibits none of the other issues on the BD.
The cestfait one seems the best one.
Here's one of my ippo eppisodes if anyone is interested:
