In 2018, Toei dropped an actually competent remaster of their Dragon Ball movies (aside from the cropped aspect ratio) on Amazon and Netflix in the Japanese region. Soon thereafter, I released them on here.
However, due to a whole audio syncing fiasco, I was never fully satisfied with that release, if for no other reason than the fact that I let the people down to a degree.
In any event, I’m here now to right that wrong. Not only did the original torrent need seeding anyway, but the link to the fixed versions of the trailers was dead, so I thought it was worth doing a V2.
Audio on the main movies are still crap as I’m holding out to rip my Laserdiscs for good audio. Would it be a V3 or a whole new release? Time will tell. Other than that, all of the same rules apply.
For now, enjoy, but let me know if there are any issues. The sooner I know about them, the better though.
Uhm... You do know that for the movies, TOEI actually DID keep the original master audios, so there is actually nothing wrong with the original audio on any of the Japanese DVD's, BD's, and these Web-DL's? Because of the Broadcast Audio making so much of a difference for the series, people tend to forget this.
Also, it's not really cropped, as the movies were matted for widescreen, as that is how they were intended to be seen, which is why there is unfinished animation here and there when seen in 4:3, like Piccolo's half hand near the end of DBZ movie 4.
Not trashing, just saying, for correctness' sake. Thanks for the release.
@pukulan10jurus, I wish I could just say "C'est la vie," and just let opinions be opinions, but I will address your points. Respectfully, of course.
Toei did indeed hang onto their master tape for the movie audio (at least for the Z movies), but the problem is that they meddled way too much in the presentation of it in their Blu-ray sets.
Let's just disregard the DNR and visual censorship for one moment. They decided to erase any atmospherical points in the audio tracks and leave them totally silent. Meaning that any moment where there's no music, SFX, or dialogue, the audio is absolutely silent. It's jarring, out of place, and sounds really bad, namely on a good sound system.
For these reasons, I'm opting to hold out for Laserdisc audio, out of principle, if for no other cause.
Your anecdotes about the cropping are true to an extent, but given the circumstances, it's certainly subjective. I'm of the opinion that at the very least, if streaming if nowhere else, we should have been given the option of 4:3 or 16:9. I think so much detail, specifically scenery-wise was sacrificed, even on Toei's crop that one unfinished Masenko animation that's on screen for 2-3 seconds of the entire runtime is certainly worthwhile to see the entire scope of the animation.
@NikoLiberty: I was just saying for clarification and maybe save you the trouble of fixing something that actually isn't a total clusterfuck. I've heard people complaining about BD audio for all the wrong reasons. You actually have some valid reasons here. (I think you're actually the first lol) That being said, an extra set of audio never hurts. Also, you might also have an isolated score soundtrack without the voices on LD, like lots of movies have. But I was merely stating the audio at least isn't totally fucked up, like with the TV series' optical audio.
I've never thoroughly checked out the WEB audio, let alone compare it to LD, but I have compared the BD to Dragon Box, and the BD came out just slightly better.
I prefer 16:9 myself, but I do like to have a 4:3 version for completeness' sake, too. For the DBZ movies, I think the French DVD's are a good source for that. Slightly better than the Funi singles. ;-)
Speaking of letting people down, Arian, you still haven't shipped my Laserdisc and VHS tape back to me. If you are going to steal my property, the least that you are morally obligated to do is provide me with a raw capture of said stolen goods.
@DrBALL these are the same raw WEB-DLs that were released way back in 2018, with no subs, no dubs, and only muffled optical audio. The only thing unique about this v2 is that the trailers aren't messed up.
Both this https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1529429 and this https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1145208 have more features while you wait for our release.
And here's the LD audio if that's more your thing (use a base64 decoder): `aHR0cHM6Ly9kcml2ZS5nb29nbGUuY29tL2RyaXZlL2ZvbGRlcnMvMW1uZWZlZ0JRWVNDRUIxRW9wQXN6cDl5ZXFjNlY4SFRaP3VzcD1zaGFyZV9saW5r`
There is no muffled optical audio. TOEI actually kept the master audio for the movies, as is even stated in this very comment section...
(See what I mean now, NikoLiberty...) :D
@pukulan10jurus I know that Toei kept the master audio. What I'm saying is that it's been known since the Amazon version was first ripped back in 2018 that the audio that came with it was worse quality than even the earlier DBOX, similar to what FUNi uses on their releases. You can see it mentioned in the comments for the v1 torrent and back in forums around that time, and Arian even mentions it in the description for this torrent. Since then the Blu-Rays came out which DO have the master audio (or at least filtered LD master audio), but I was talking about this specific release, not the Toei remasters in general. I'm not trying to shit on this release and I appreciate that Arian was who provided us with these files in the first place, my comment was merely trying to guide people to more recent releases that have the exact same (or better) video quality as this torrent, but better audio quality and subs.
Compare the files yourself to see that only the trailers have changed, meaning the audio on this release is the same as what's on the initial raw rips despite better audio now being available: https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1063112
*EDIT: Here are two comps I just made from the very first dialogue in DB M1, so people don't think I'm making it up.

Who cares about a slim amount of "misinformation" as you put it? Stop being such a basement dweller!
iKaos pointed those of us who were unaware of such intricacies, in the right direction, and at the end of the day, it's all that matters. :)
It's like you wanted to stop the flow of correction information from flowing pukulan10jurus. Stop it

Ajay in 2018 saying the WEB-DLs use optical audio: https://www.kanzenshuu.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1521580#p1521580
Kei17 in 2016 saying the movies screened in Japan with optical audio, saying they sound similar to FUNi JP audio: https://www.kanzenshuu.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1042860#p1042860
It's known that FUNi only received optical JP audio for the movies, and the WEB-DL audio sounds very similar to how FUNi JP audio sounds. It's known that Japan still used its optical prints for screenings, and that the WEB-DLs have muffled audio just like every single other source that comes from optical audio, like all the non-movie DBOXes.
Yes, Toei still had the audio masters for the movies, which they used on the LDs, DBOX, and the BDs. But that is not what they used in THIS specific release. I don't find that to be misinformation. If someone can present me with a source or evidence that I'm wrong, then I will obviously defer to them.
@iKaos:

I didn't knew that. I never considered Web-DL using different sources from the BD and Dragon Box, considering the weirdness of it. Sorry for calling you misinformating then. Guess I was misinformed myself lol.
@DrBALL: I'll stop if you stop kissing iKaos' ass...
