**Notes**
Video demuxed from Source #1 with eac3to. The home video releases of this film have notoriously been plagued by issues for years (particularly with the HD releases) and the UHD releases are no exception. If the available sources, USA, ITA, and GER UHDs feature over-contrasted grades, with GER UHD being the least bad among them. JPN UHD features the grade most consistent with previous releases. GER UHD has also been heavily sharpened and grained to the point that the encode often creates additional blocking and artifacts. None of the available UHD sources are perfect, but it is clear that the JPN UHD is the most faithful to existing source materials.

Original stereo mix demuxed from Source #1 and losslessly converted to FLAC with eac3to. In contrast to the video quality of available releases, the stereo mix was surprisingly consistent and high quality across the releases considered for comparison. Even when comparing to the [Bandai/Emotion \[BEAL-921\] LaserDisc](https://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/12871/BEAL-921/Ghost-in-the-Shell:-Premium-Box), the Blu-ray mixes hold up well. The only notable difference between mixes are that FRA is boosted to the point of clipping, some are 16-bit, and each mix does their own roll-off at 22 kHz (Nyquist for original sample rate). Ended up going with JPN UHD since it was 24-bit and already in sync. Would have gone with the LaserDisc audio, but there were frame difference and figured it wasn't worth editing when synced sources were already such high quality. Also of note are the Lionsgate UHD/HD Blu-rays, which feature, as far as I can tell, the only Japanese stereo tracks in existence without the original credits music, instead featuring the song _One Minute Warning_ by The Passengers that was present on the original Western home video releases, all available dub tracks, and many Japanese upmixes. The existing Framestor remux of the GER UHD disc features audio only from the Lionsgate discs, so the original credits music is not present in that release. For users that wish to hear the alternative credits music, it is present in the English dub and Atmos upmixes on this remux.

English stereo mix demuxed from Source #1 and losslessly converted to FLAC with eac3to. There are fewer sources for the stereo configuration of the English dub, but the JPN UHD is the highest quality available. JPN BD is from a lossy master and the optical audio from the LaserDisc has a few tiny artifacts + has frame differences so just went with the JPN UHD since it was 24-bit and required no editing to sync.

TrueHD Atmos Japanese + English dub mixes demuxed from Source #2 with eac3to, synced. There are a lot of 5.1/6.1 upmixes of the main audio but the Atmos tracks were high quality so were included. Both tracks include the alternate credits music.
DD 2.0 commentary demuxed from Source #2, synced. Commentaries were all identical except for ITA which had a much lower band limit.

Various PGS subtitles demuxed, synced, tonemapped to #999999 to match JPN UHD. English, Spanish, French, Italian PGS subs OCRed, spellchecked. Various web SRT subtitles synced. Multiple translations were included when available. There are two English translations available: One on the original DVDs and Japanese Blu-rays by Yoshida Taro & Paul C. Halbert, and another used on the USA, GBR, AUS Blu-rays that appears to have first appeared around 2018 on the Madman release. Both translations were included as well as US/GB localizations of the new translation when available. I preferred the original translation so it was set as default and the custom ASS Judgment subs are from this translation. SDH subs were only available in the new translation. Retail English forced subs for the dub only contained 3-4 cues for the opening crawl so the Judgement signs & songs were set to Forced. The only modifications I made to the existing translations was normalizing Bateau/Batou -> Batou across English subtitles.
Named chapters from the JPN Blu-ray synced to JPN UHD and adjusted to nearest scene transition I- or P-frame when necessary. There were additional named chapters on the old Madman and Manga DVDs which roughly matched the timing but the names were clunkier so the JPN Blu was preferred. Enjoy!
